by Mark Villamora MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU) President Ada Milby and Head of Operations & Strategy Vincent Davo paid a courtesy visit to Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports, on July 9, discussing potential partnerships and support for the development of grassroots rugby and drug eradication through sports initiatives. One of the PRFU’s sport for development initiatives discussed is the “Pass It Back" program, which focuses on using rugby as a tool to teach valuable life skills and promote healthy lifestyles among the youth. Discussion also included the PRFU Get Into Rugby festivals, which engage local communities and provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and learn the values of teamwork and discipline through rugby. The Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports, which its position mandated to promote sports development in the country, appreciated the efforts of PRFU in promoting rugby at the grassroots level and emphasized the need for such programs to reach more communities for drug prevention. “Thank you [PRFU President] Ada for having those activities in your organization. The office of senate committee on sports really appreciates those initiatives,” said Senator Bong Go during the conversation. Senator Bong Go expressed his commitment to supporting PRFU’s sports initiatives for Filipino youth and mentioned exploring possible ways to assist rugby union in expanding its reach and impact. “Our office would be very willing to find ways to support you for your upcoming programs. Please let us know how we can help together in developing your sports in our country,” added Senator Go. Senator Go also inquires how the Philippine Volcanoes Teams are preparing for the upcoming Asia Rugby Seven in Kathmandu, Nepal on October 4-6, and how the athlete is being taken care of by the union. The Office of Senator Bong Go recently provided financial support towards the National Teams Program of Philippine Rugby amounting to PHP 1 Million in 2023, and PHP 282,000 for the Rising Stars participation at the SEA 7s in May 2024. PRFU's visit with Senator Bong Go concluded on a positive note, with Senator Go expressing a mutual understanding of the importance of sports in youth development and drug prevention, with both parties committed to exploring further opportunities for collaboration. MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU) will be having 47 youth coaches, marking the largest number of participants so far, for the upcoming ChildFund Rugby Pass It Back Training for Coaches, scheduled on July 17 to 22, in Talisay City, Negros Occidental. This second Pass It Back Training for Coaches this 2024 expects to beat the record of 39 certified youth coaches produced from the first half of the year that delivered the Pass It Back curriculum to kids within their own communities. The upcoming pool of aspiring youth coaches includes young people from different backgrounds to ensure the program benefits from a range of perspectives and experiences, providing opportunities to both in-school and out-of-school youth from different areas of Negros Occidental, Albay Province, Olongapo, and including guests from Turkey. Since the inception of the Pass It Back program in 2017, which targets young individuals from vulnerable communities, the PRFU has been pioneering the program's goals in the country and has already produced a total of 119 young coaches. Together with these certified young coaches, the PRFU has significantly expanded the reach of the ChildFund Rugby program, which started in Negros Occidental, to additional hubs in Albay and Makati, and is now growing in Olongapo City. The PRFU is committed to continue to deliver the World Rugby Pass It Back program goals by conducting two seasons of Pass It Back Training for Coaches each year, nurturing these aspiring young coaches through a comprehensive training that covers all the necessary aspects for coaching, including rugby skills, life skills, safeguarding, and child protection.
