International School Manila defended their MANSAC Schoolboys Varsity Rugby title with a 50-7 win against their rival, British School Manila. ISM maintained a clean slate throughout the season with 8 wins and no losses. The Varsity final featured a host of players who played in the Junior Volcanoes team in 2013 and this set the platform for an exciting finals match. Well done to both teams for an outstanding season. Congratulations to the ISM Varsity Boys team and coaching staff for a stellar season and good luck in the IASIS schoolboys' competition this February. FINAL Varsity Log Points Table
The first Get Into Rugby (GIR) Festival Juniors Tournament sponsored by CBRE for 2014 was held on Jan 25 at the International School Manila. Spanning five different age groups and traveling from as far as Alabang and Pampanga, twenty-one teams played in the juniors touch variation of Rugby. The u8 Mavericks and BSM teams had a good run starting the day off with a draw but then BSM edged out two more wins at 3-2 to come out on top. The u10s had a different outcome as Mavericks and BSM both played well with the addition of CRC to the mix. CRC used their speed and agility to push for the win at the end of the game series. In the u12 and u14 divisions, the teams are really starting to learn good space and evasion techniques. The Mavericks were able to win the u12 games with 3 straight wins, but struggled in the u14 division where the hard work of the foundation teams like Leighton Tuloy, CRC, and Quest SOS took the spotlight for places 1, 2, and 3 respectively. It was a tough day for the HMR Southridge team as last minute player changes affected team dynamics. In the u16 division, Leighton Tuloy again dominated as many of their players are gaining momentum through multiple years of play. G4S Childhope was not far behind which speaks to their raw talent as a relatively new staple to the CBRE Juniors tournament. HMR Southridge fared better in this division, pulling out a win against Quest SOS to come in third. The tournament was followed by the finals for MANSAC Schoolboys League where some of the u12, u14, and u16 players joined for contact games. Thank you to ISM, our sponsors and PRFU for a successful tournament. The next GIR Festival Juniors Tournament sponsored by CBRE is scheduled for February 22 at Nomads Sports Club.
The Middle School and Junior Varsity finals were held at the International School of Manila on Saturday, 25th of January. The afternoon started with the newly formed u12s tackle teams from ISM, BSM, EIS and CRC playing two games. These were both extremely close contests with the Combined schools team winning the first game 10 – 5 and then both teams went toe to toe in the second game to end in a 5 – 5 draw. The Middle school finals saw ISM take on the Mavericks and in a slow start to the first game, both teams ground out a 5 – 5 all draw to set up the final for the second game. The ISM team came out firing in the final game and took the Mavericks by surprise and won the MANSAC Middle School final by 38 – 0. The first Junior Varsity semi finals was played between ISM Gold and Green. Gold won the tight battle (17 – 15), because of a succesful conversion late in the game. CRC played against BSM in the other JV semi final match. The boys from Clark proved once again that speed and agility are powerful weapons in rugby as they ran out winners by 27 – 0. This set up the JV Final with ISM Gold going into the game with a size advantage and the CRC team taking the speed advantage. The game hung in the balance and the scores were locked at 5 – 5 all at the halfway mark. Both teams had opportunities in the second half and it was ISM that scored first to take the lead. We saw the usual comeback as CRC threw caution to the wind and ran in a late try to finish regulation time at 10 – 10. The JV final then went to overtime for the golden point and it was the CRC team that swooped on an open kick to win the ball and score first in extra time. Congratulations to CRC for winning the 2014 MANSAC Schoolboys JV finals. The MANSAC teams would like to thank ISM for hosting the finals and the PRFU for providing the Match Officials and schedules. The Get Into Rugby/CBRE Juniors tournament for the month was held last November 23 at the International School Manila. Twenty one juniors touch and tackle teams from 5 age groups competed in the monthly event. All teams are part of the IRB Get Into Rugby program/PRFU's grassroots development program. With 3 wins and no losses, British School Manila won the under 8 division against the Makati Mavericks. On the other hand, it was the latter who dominated the former in their best of 3 games of the under 10 division. It was a fun and exciting day for the kids, made more special with the presence of their families who cheered them from the sidelines. In the under 12 division, Makati Mavericks finished on top of the rankings with 3 wins and no losses. BSM, Leighton Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation, and Quest SOS Children's Village fought hard but the Mavericks' teamwork and experience helped them finish strong in their games. It was the same result in the under 14 division as the older Mavericks won 2 games and drew 1 to finish on top. The Manila Hapons finished closely at second with only a point separating them from the top team. Clark Rugby Club finished third with a win, a draw, and a loss. Leighton Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation were the champions in the under 16 division with 2 wins and no losses. The boys from Alabang narrowly won over rivals Clark Rugby Club (1-0) and Southridge International School (2-0). European International School finished second with a win and a draw. Clark Rugby Club finished third in the rankings with a win and a loss. In the under 12 half field tackle game, the Makati Mavericks scored 6 tries over International School Manila's 2 tries to win the match. Mavericks won again in the under 14 full field tackle game with 14 points (2 tries 2 conversions) over ISM's 5 points (1 try). The combined team of Clark Rugby Club and Quest SOS Children's Village in the under 14 full field tackle game showed a lot of potential when they scored 21 points (3 tries 3 conversions) against ISM's 12 points (2 tries 1 conversion). The combined team showed superb speed in their backs line as they scored back to back breakaway tries in the game. It was the first tackle game for most of the SOS kids who played in the combined team. The next Get Into Rugby/CBRE Juniors tournament will be held on January 2014.
