Philippine Rugby’s Premiership Division kicks off this weekend for Round 1 of the SPI 15s Rugby Championships at Southern Plains, Calamba. From February, through to June, teams from all over Luzon will be competing in four separate divisions to be crowned the 2018 SPI League Champions. The U19s Colts Division will see the Eagles RFC and the Santos Knight Frank Mavericks face off in what looks to be an exciting Division. Both teams have traditionally been the feeder programs to the Philippine U19 National Team and will also act as another development pathway for youth rugby. “The U19s division will enable the best local players from schools and universities to play regular fixtures. It’s an avenue to increase their experience in the 15s form, to be better enable the transition to Men’s rugby” shared Jake Letts of Philippine Rugby. The women’s fixtures will see players from the Makati Chiefs, the Eagles RFC and the Mavericks Rugby Club. The big match up will be no doubt the return of the heavyweights for the Premiership, the Manila Nomads and the Eagles RFC.
The Nomads will be going in as reigning champions from 2017 after defeating the Eagles in a upset of last year’s grand final. Both teams have traditionally faced off in extremely challenging matches over the years. “We have a friendly rivalry with the Eagles; they always boast several national players so it’s always a good match up. We are excited to get back on the field for 2018, and have another close fought series. We have some new recruits ourselves, the likes of Robert Amalay Jones and Ben Mudie, both players have represented the Volcanoes, be a good match” shared Nick Jones, a Team Captain for Manila. The Eagles RFC will boast Volcanoes Joe Palabay Dawson, Timothy Bweheni and Jackson Pato in their lineup. Entry is free, matches start at 10:00am for the Colts, 11:30am for the Women’s and 1:00pm for the Premiership.
