The Get Into Rugby/CBRE Juniors tournament for the month was held last March 29 at the Southern Plains field in Silangan, Laguna. Twenty juniors touch and tackle teams from 4 age groups competed in the monthly event. All teams are part of the IRB Get Into Rugby program/PRFU's grassroots development program. The Makati Mavericks and the British School Manila played best of four matches in the under 10 division. Both teams played well in all the matches, with three out of the four matches ending up as draw (0-0, 1-1, 1-1)! Mavericks edged BSM with a single try (3-2) in the second match to win the under 10 division for this month's tourney. In the under 12 division, Makati Mavericks finished on top of the rankings with 2 wins and 1 draw. Quest SOS Children's Village came in at second place with a win, a loss, and a draw. Newly formed team Eagles juniors showed they are a team to watch out for as they gained a hard-earned win despite two losses. Coached by NDT players brothers Jovic and Jaypee Paypon, Eagles Jr. displayed great attacking skills using their natural athletic abilities and superb speed. Quest SOS Children's Village emerged victorious in the under 14 division with two wins and a draw. The much-improved team played with better structure and attacking plays which gave them an advantage over their opponents. Clark Rugby Club and Makati Mavericks both came away with two wins and a loss. Despite the same results, the CRC boys came in at second place because of their narrow win (4-3) against the Mavericks boys. Clark Rugby Club topped the under 16 division with their two wins and one draw finish. The boys from Pampanga had a slow start against Tuloy (0-0) before they managed to get convincing wins against Don Bosco-Canlubang (6-1) and Makati Mavericks (5-0). Leighton Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation finished at second while the Makati Mavericks came in at third place. The combined team of Clark Rugby Club and Quest SOS Children's Village in the under 14 full field tackle game scored 22 points (4 tries 1 conversion) against Mavericks' 12 points (2 tries 1 conversion). The combined team showed superb speed in their backs line as they scored back to back breakaway tries in the game. It was the same result in the under 16 division as the combined CRC-SOS boys ran away with a 36-5 win over the Mavericks boys. Led by junior Volcano standout Jonel Madrona, the combined team scored a series of breakaway tries mostly in the second half to seal their win. The next Get Into Rugby/CBRE Juniors tournament will be held on May 10, 2014. Interested teams may email [email protected] for further inquiries. TEAMS:

National coaches Jarred Hodges and Stuart Woodhouse will trim the squad down at the end of the training camp, with the final team announced before each match. The Asian 5 Nations is the region's premier Rugby Union competition among the top five national rugby teams in Asia. On its first year in the top 5 in 2013, the Philippines defeated the United Arab Emirates at the Rizal Memorial Stadium to remain in the Premier Division for 2014. The Philippine Volcanoes will face Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Sri Lanka in a round-robin competition over five consecutive weekends throughout April and May 2014. Asian 5 Nations Premier Division Schedule
The Asian 5 Nations represents the highest tier of international Rugby in Asia and in 2014, is Asia's qualifying tournament for the Rugby World Cup 2015.
The national squad is made up of Filipino heritage players (who were either born in the Philippines, or have at least one parent or grand parent that was born in the Philippines) and a few foreign-blooded players who have been based in the Philippines for at least three consecutive years, as allowed by International Rugby Board (IRB) regulations.
The Alabang Eagles proved that they will be a force at this year’s Manila 10s by convincingly defeating the Manila Nomads Rugby Club in all three rounds of the JML 10s league. The Eagles showed they can play attacking rugby and capitalized on every opportunity, with Volcano players Gaz Holgate and Andrew Wolff leading the way. Both made incisive runs to test the Nomads' defense. Nomad’s halfback and former captain Aaron Briddon kept the Nomads in the game with two tries that came from powerful forwards' play. The Eagles’ star-studded back line proved to strong and ran in four tries to win the final by 29 – 10. The Women’s division was played over two games between the Manila Mayhem and the Cebu Lady Dragons. The Manila team won both the games to claim the championship. Both teams played with passion and determination but the Manila team was able to control the field advantage and showed that defense wins championships by continually pinning the Cebu team in their own quarter. Cebu came back in the second game and the Manila team was up to the challenge with some storming runs from Lady Volcanoes captain Ada Milby and torrid defense from Acee San Juan and Cassie Umali. The Manila team won the first game by 12 – 0 and then hung on to win the second game and the final by 12 – 5. The Alabang Ibons took out the Plate Championship by defeating the CBRE Mavericks by 31 – 0. Both these teams will be playing in the Manila 10s in two weeks and will push to win either the Bowl or Shield trophy. The Ibons took control of the match, with Juan Engelbrecht and David Carman displaying good attacking skills and opened up the Mavericks' defense on several occasions. The Alabang Falcons made it a clean sweep for the Alabang team by winning the Bowl Division. The Falcons, who are predominately from PNG, showed they have adapted from playing Rugby league to now understanding the rules of Rugby Union. The Falcons' strong defense and love of attacking rugby served them well as they dominated the Bowl division to win the final by 33 – 7 over the CBRE Vipers. The Falcons will also make their debut at the Manila 10s and will definitely challenge the higher rated teams, especially now that they have played the last five weeks in the JML 10s league. The Association of Local Colleges and Universities (ALCU) Games were held last Monday and Tuesday, March 3-4, 2014, at University of Makati oval. This tournament marked the third time Touch Rugby was included in the association's calendar sports. Three women's teams and three men's teams competed for the champion title in their respective divisions. In the men's division matches, it was host school University of Makati (UMAK) Herons and the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) who battled it out for league supremacy. The rookie team Taguig City University (TCU) fought hard on all their games but were ultimately bested by the other teams' experience. The finals match between UMAK and PLM was the highlight of the tournament. UMAK Herons, who had the home field advantage and the cheers from a predominantly UMAK crowd, made their presence felt early with a diving try just seconds after the kick off. PLM capitalized on a defensive error and made a break on the wing to score their first try of the game. It was a seesaw battle from then as both teams answered back try after try. A yellow card issued to a UMAK player gave PLM the chance to win the match but the UMAK boys' awesome defense prevented them from doing so. Full time ended and the score was still 4-4 draw. Extra time was needed to determine the winner of the match. A draw and pass to the wing 3 minutes into extra time gave the PLM boys the golden point they needed to secure the crown. Hats off to both team for playing well in the finals match. In the ladies matches, University of Makati (UMAK) Herons and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) battled it out for the women’s title. The UMAK Lady Herons, led by three national team standouts, were undefeated in the round games. PLM had a draw in their round game against the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa (PLMun) but due to higher for-against quotient, they were able to secure their spot in the finals. The Lady Herons experience and teamwork gave them an advantage against the newly-formed PLM team. Despite this advantage, PLM still managed to score a try against UMAK. Match ended with a 6-1 win for the UMAK ladies. Good job to both teams for a well-fought match. This tournament introduced Rugby's new “set and roll” rule. Traditionally, players put the ball on the ground and stepped over it upon being touched. Under the new rule, players had to kneel on one or both knees upon getting touched. Two handed touch below the chest level was also implemented plus the 'open play' option when ball is knocked back. The quick line out rule was also introduced in this year's games. This variation is more consistent with the rules of full contact rugby. All teams were able to adjust to the new rule and played fun, high-level games throughout the tournament. ALCU Games is an annual event. PRFU's goals are to include more member schools in the rugby division and be able to play full contact rugby 7s matches in the future.
