After a three-month break, the Get Into Rugby Festival/CBRE Juniors Tournament is back! Twenty-five teams in four different age groups played Touch and Tackle games last Saturday, September 13, at Nomad Sports Club, Parañaque City. This was also the first round of the Youth Club 10s tournament which saw the entries of two u14 teams and four u16 teams. Good job to the Eagles Jr u16 tackle team (supported by HMR Philippines) which played their first ever tackle game! The Makati Mavericks claimed the top spot in the u10 touch division with 2 wins and no losses. They scored a total of 6 points and no points scored against them. They also won the top spot in the u12 touch. Quest SOS Children's Village came in at second in that division. In the u14 touch division, Clark Jets from Pampanga got the top spot with 2 wins and a draw with a F-A of +5. Mavericks came in close at second also with 2 wins and a draw but with a F-A of +3. It was the new team Haven for Children boys from Alabang who placed 3rd with a win and 2 draws. Great work Haven boys for placing 3rd in their first ever tournament! The u16 touch division saw another Mavericks-Clark Jets showdown. Both teams finished the games with 3 wins and no losses. The difference in the F-A points gave the Mavericks +10 to get the top spot while the Jets came in at second with +5 F-A points. The first match for the juniors tackle games was between Mavericks u14 and Clark Jets u14. The Jets dominated the first half but the Mavericks, led by Jason Schirmer, slowly got themselves back in the match in the second half. A last minute try from Schirmer got the Mavericks closer to Clark with 27-28 but conversion was unsuccessful and time expired. Jason Schirmer was later awarded the man of the match. The first match in the u16 tackle division was between Mavericks and Clark Jets. Mavericks won 22 - 12 and the player of the match award was given to Clark Jets' Steve Rauras. The last match of the day was between Quest SOS Children's Village u16 and Eagles Jr u16. It was the second time SOS played a full tackle game while it was a debut for the Eagles boys. SOS used their quick backs line to score tries out wide while the Eagles used the strength of their forwards pack to drive through their opponents' defensive wall. Final score was SOS 22 - 5 Eagles Jr. SOS' Ronald Longgasa was later awarded player of the match. Each MVP per age group in the touch division was awarded Patrick cleats from HMR Philippines. All three players of the match in the juniors tackle games were also awarded Patrick cleats. Thank you HMR Philippines and Loro Sports for these prizes. May’s Get Into Rugby(GIR) Festival Juniors Tournament sponsored by CBRE for 2014 was held on May 3rd at the Southern Plains Eagles Nest Clubhouse. Running as a morning festival in preparation for the afternoon game between Japan and the Philippine Volcanoes for the A5N series, there was an impressive turnout for the day including the newly formed Marikina Juniors and Alabang Eagles Juniors teams. The u10 games between BSM and Eagles Juniors started the day off with a big win for the new team playing in their first tournament. Winning two games and one draw, the Eagles Juniors are off to a promising start. The U12 division proved to be more difficult for the Eagles as they played against the very established teams like CRC and SOS. Their knowledge and game experience clearly made a difference in their games. Hapons came out looking to set the precedence like their senior side would play in the afternoon and played with fervor and discipline. They won two of their 3 games, with just a marginal loss to CRC at 1-2. Mavericks had good day in this division as they pushed to play four games instead of the standard three. Quest SOS, Leighton Tuloy, and CRC continue to be powerhouses in this division either winning or drawing all their games. The u14 division included the debut of the Marikina Juniors. They didn’t win their games, but they learned a lot from these first games and are excited about returning for future tournaments. All teams played well but the game to watch in this division was between CBRE Mavericks and Leighton Tuloy. A tight game with both teams battling to come out on top. In the final moments, Tuloy scored the winning try for a final score of 4-3. The lower final scores in the u16 division, show that defensive skills are developing in this age group. The mainstay teams like Leighton Tuloy, CRC and Quest SOS continue to lead the packs, but up and coming teams like G4S Childhope and HMR Southridge and Don Bosco teams are putting up good fights and the scores continue to narrow. The tournament was followed by the Asian 5 Nations game between the Philippine Volcanoes and 13th ranked team in the world, Japan. Players from the juniors teams joined the Volcanoes and the Hapons joined Japan on the field for the playing of national anthems to round out this full day of rugby. Thank you to Alabang Eagles, CBRE and all our sponsors for a successful tournament. The next GIR Festival Juniors Tournament sponsored by CBRE is scheduled for August 30.
The Get Into Rugby/CBRE Juniors tournament for the month was held last March 29 at the Southern Plains field in Silangan, Laguna. Twenty juniors touch and tackle teams from 4 age groups competed in the monthly event. All teams are part of the IRB Get Into Rugby program/PRFU's grassroots development program. The Makati Mavericks and the British School Manila played best of four matches in the under 10 division. Both teams played well in all the matches, with three out of the four matches ending up as draw (0-0, 1-1, 1-1)! Mavericks edged BSM with a single try (3-2) in the second match to win the under 10 division for this month's tourney. In the under 12 division, Makati Mavericks finished on top of the rankings with 2 wins and 1 draw. Quest SOS Children's Village came in at second place with a win, a loss, and a draw. Newly formed team Eagles juniors showed they are a team to watch out for as they gained a hard-earned win despite two losses. Coached by NDT players brothers Jovic and Jaypee Paypon, Eagles Jr. displayed great attacking skills using their natural athletic abilities and superb speed. Quest SOS Children's Village emerged victorious in the under 14 division with two wins and a draw. The much-improved team played with better structure and attacking plays which gave them an advantage over their opponents. Clark Rugby Club and Makati Mavericks both came away with two wins and a loss. Despite the same results, the CRC boys came in at second place because of their narrow win (4-3) against the Mavericks boys. Clark Rugby Club topped the under 16 division with their two wins and one draw finish. The boys from Pampanga had a slow start against Tuloy (0-0) before they managed to get convincing wins against Don Bosco-Canlubang (6-1) and Makati Mavericks (5-0). Leighton Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation finished at second while the Makati Mavericks came in at third place. The combined team of Clark Rugby Club and Quest SOS Children's Village in the under 14 full field tackle game scored 22 points (4 tries 1 conversion) against Mavericks' 12 points (2 tries 1 conversion). The combined team showed superb speed in their backs line as they scored back to back breakaway tries in the game. It was the same result in the under 16 division as the combined CRC-SOS boys ran away with a 36-5 win over the Mavericks boys. Led by junior Volcano standout Jonel Madrona, the combined team scored a series of breakaway tries mostly in the second half to seal their win. The next Get Into Rugby/CBRE Juniors tournament will be held on May 10, 2014. Interested teams may email [email protected] for further inquiries. TEAMS:

Spanning five different age groups and traveling from as far as Alabang and Pampanga, twenty-one teams played in the juniors touch variation of Rugby. The u8 Mavericks and BSM teams had a good run starting the day off with a draw but then BSM edged out two more wins at 3-2 to come out on top. The u10s had a different outcome as Mavericks and BSM both played well with the addition of CRC to the mix. CRC used their speed and agility to push for the win at the end of the game series. In the u12 and u14 divisions, the teams are really starting to learn good space and evasion techniques. The Mavericks were able to win the u12 games with 3 straight wins, but struggled in the u14 division where the hard work of the foundation teams like Leighton Tuloy, CRC, and Quest SOS took the spotlight for places 1, 2, and 3 respectively. It was a tough day for the HMR Southridge team as last minute player changes affected team dynamics. In the u16 division, Leighton Tuloy again dominated as many of their players are gaining momentum through multiple years of play. G4S Childhope was not far behind which speaks to their raw talent as a relatively new staple to the CBRE Juniors tournament. HMR Southridge fared better in this division, pulling out a win against Quest SOS to come in third. The tournament was followed by the finals for MANSAC Schoolboys League where some of the u12, u14, and u16 players joined for contact games. Thank you to ISM, our sponsors and PRFU for a successful tournament. The next GIR Festival Juniors Tournament sponsored by CBRE is scheduled for February 22 at Nomads Sports Club.
The Middle School and Junior Varsity finals were held at the International School of Manila on Saturday, 25th of January. The afternoon started with the newly formed u12s tackle teams from ISM, BSM, EIS and CRC playing two games. These were both extremely close contests with the Combined schools team winning the first game 10 – 5 and then both teams went toe to toe in the second game to end in a 5 – 5 draw. The Middle school finals saw ISM take on the Mavericks and in a slow start to the first game, both teams ground out a 5 – 5 all draw to set up the final for the second game. The ISM team came out firing in the final game and took the Mavericks by surprise and won the MANSAC Middle School final by 38 – 0. The first Junior Varsity semi finals was played between ISM Gold and Green. Gold won the tight battle (17 – 15), because of a succesful conversion late in the game. CRC played against BSM in the other JV semi final match. The boys from Clark proved once again that speed and agility are powerful weapons in rugby as they ran out winners by 27 – 0. This set up the JV Final with ISM Gold going into the game with a size advantage and the CRC team taking the speed advantage. The game hung in the balance and the scores were locked at 5 – 5 all at the halfway mark. Both teams had opportunities in the second half and it was ISM that scored first to take the lead. We saw the usual comeback as CRC threw caution to the wind and ran in a late try to finish regulation time at 10 – 10. The JV final then went to overtime for the golden point and it was the CRC team that swooped on an open kick to win the ball and score first in extra time. Congratulations to CRC for winning the 2014 MANSAC Schoolboys JV finals. The MANSAC teams would like to thank ISM for hosting the finals and the PRFU for providing the Match Officials and schedules.
