The Volcanoes competed against Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei on April 14 and 17.
Hong Kong were a well-drilled side and deserved the number 2 ranking. They discovered a weakness in the Volcanoes back line and exploited it to go in to half time leading 29-0. After a half time huddle with coaches Marcus Skeen and Evans Atandi, the Volcanoes came out and put on 2 tries, including the first try under the post which resulted from 27 phases. The Hong Kong team regained their composure to pile on a further 29 points to win the game, 58-14. The Volcanoes spent the next few days adjusting the weaknesses discovered by Hong Kong to prepare for the game against Chinese Taipei. The weather was cold and wet for the final game and the Volcanoes were quite notably uncomfortable in the weather. Chinese Taipei came out of the blocks running and quickly showed they were not bothered by the weather and went in to half time leading 26-0. After the break the Volcanoes finally switched on and started to play rugby. They won the second half 10-5 but eventually lost the match 31-10. Warren Carmen was named player of the tournament. Hong Kong went on to win the Championship, beating hosts Chinese Taipei 20:10. The tour was a fact-finding exercise after pulling together a squad in 4 weeks. With more structure and better time to prepare, the Under 18's programme will be able to compete with the best of the Division 1 teams from 2012 and onwards.
