Pasig City, Philippines - The 2024 PRFU Domestic XVs League is set to kick off this Saturday, 2 March 2024, at the prestigious Ultra Philsports Complex in Pasig City. The season opener will feature matches from the Championship Division, with Gorillas Rugby Club and Braves RFC hosting the opening games. The first match of the day will be between Braves RFC and Ibons at 1:00 pm. This will be the debut game for the Braves RFC who recently formed their team last year, while Ibons is the 2nd team of one of the senior premiership teams in the Philippines, the Eagles RFC. The Braves are poised for a historic occasion as they step onto the Philippine Rugby field for the very first time. However, expect the Ibons, led by scrumhalf and Rising Stars athlete, Joeben Belda, to give a fierce fight. The second match of the day will be a clash between Gorillas RFC and Clark Jets at 3:00 pm. Gorillas, who will also play their first 15s game after successfully establishing their team last year during the 7s season, will face one of the top teams in the Philippines, the Clark Jets. The Jets will be led by Philippine Volcano and local legend, Jonel Madrona. Jake Letts, who first joined PRFU as one of the inaugural international heritage players in 2005, has been an integral part of the organization, contributing tirelessly both on and off the field. His journey with the Volcanoes saw him represent the team in both 15s and 7s until 2017, showcasing his exceptional skills and commitment to the sport. Over the years, Letts transitioned seamlessly into administrative roles, taking on the responsibilities of National Teams Manager, General Manager, and eventually serving as CEO. His dedication, leadership, and strategic vision have been instrumental in elevating the stature of Philippine Rugby on the global stage. In recognition of his unwavering commitment, Jake Letts was co-opted to fill in a vacant Trustee position earlier this year, completing the term which concluded in December 2023. As a Trustee, Letts continued to contribute his expertise and guidance to the Board, leaving an indelible mark on the governance and strategic direction of PRFU. As PRFU looks back on Letts' significant contributions, the organization expresses its deepest gratitude for his invaluable service. With participants ranging from 7 to 19 years old, the tournament showcased the talent and passion of young rugby enthusiasts across various age categories, including U9, U12, U15, U19, and Girls divisions. A total of 200 participants competed in this exciting event, bringing together schools and teams from different communities. Notably, the tournament introduced the U9 division for the first time, with Guadalupe Elementary School making their debut and securing an impressive 3rd place finish. Pardo Elementary School secured the 2nd place, while the champions of the U9 division were SOS Children’s Village (photo on the left). In the U12 division, SOS Children’s Village successfully defended their championship title from the previous tournament. Cebu International School (CIS) claimed the 2nd place, and the Cebu City Mixed Team secured the 3rd place. The U15 division witnessed intense competition, with SOS Children’s Village and CIS teams delivering back-to-back performances. Ramon Duterte High School, featuring new players, showcased remarkable skills to secure the 3rd place. CIS (photo on right) emerged as champions for the first time in the U15 division. In the U19 division, SOS Children’s Village Cheetahs continued their dominance as back-to-back champions, followed by CIS in 2nd place and Ramon Duterte High School in 3rd place. The Ladies Division showcased outstanding performances, with Team Cebu City claiming the championship, followed by CIS in 2nd place and SOS Children's Village in 3rd place. Enhancing the excitement of the event were the tackle divisions, namely U19, Men's, and Women's Tackle Divisions. The U19s division saw SOS Cheetahs - the same team who won the U19 touch division - clinch the championship, while in the Men's Division, South District secured the Champion title. Similarly, the Women's Division witnessed South District emerging as the champions. "It is great to see the continuous growth of grassroots rugby in Cebu City. Manila, Philippines - The 2023 PRFU 7s Series - Luzon 5th and final leg came to an exhilarating conclusion last weekend, 21 October, 2023, at the prestigious Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite. The event witnessed an exceptional display of rugby excellence, with Eagles RFC emerging as the dominant force, securing the CUP Division title for both the Men's and Women's Divisions, and the Men's PLATE Division title for their development team, the Ibons. In an electrifying showdown in the Men's CUP Division finals, Eagles RFC took on the number 2 ranked team, Manila Nomads, and emerged victorious with a score of 19-7. The Women's CUP Division finals was no less thrilling, as Eagles RFC faced off against the top-ranked SKF Makati Mavericks Ricky, clinching the title with a final score of 14-5. Eagles RFC didn't stop at the CUP Division titles; they also secured the Overall Championship Titles for men's and women's, demonstrating their consistency and prowess throughout the series. The excitement extended to the Men's Plate Division, where Eagles RFC's second team IBONS triumphed, defeating Global City 7s in the Semi-finals and ultimately clinching the Plate Division title. Ibons secured a default victory over 7s season debutants, the Manila Hapons, as several of the latter's players were unable to continue the game. It's important to acknowledge that Ibons earned this win through their determined performance in the semifinals against Global City 7s and this was the team's first trophy win this season. The Women's Division Plate Finals match was also a captivating spectacle, marked by the impressive return of the ladies from the north, the Clark Jets. They secured a resounding victory, demonstrating their prowess with a dominant 24-0 lead over the formidable Manila Rogues. This outstanding performance rightfully earned them the coveted trophy, a testament to their hard work and dedication. This is the second Plate trophy for the Jets women as they were also Plate Champions in leg 2 of the series played in September. The Men's Bowl Division Finals witnessed a remarkable display of skill, determination, and resilience by the Nomads Carabaos. Facing the defending Bowl Division Champions from Leg 4, the formidable SKF Makati Mavericks Roosters, the Nomads Carabaos delivered a resounding performance. They maintained a comfortable and commanding lead throughout the match, ultimately triumphing with a score of 12-0. It is also important to note that this is the first trophy for the young Carabaos team this season. A great win to end an amazing 7s season for this great program! The 2023 PRFU 7s Series - Luzon ended on a high note, leaving fans and participants eagerly anticipating the next season.
