2017 SEA Games Training Squad Announcement - Men's

6/19/2017

The Philippine Rugby Football Union have announced their 19 man training roster for the upcoming August Southeast Asian Games (SEAG).

The Globe Ph Volcanoes will be vying to defend their Gold Medal in Malaysia as they compete in their third SEAG.

The Volcanoes have recorded credible results in their past SEAG outings. A silver medal in 2007 (Thailand) and more recently a Gold Medal in 2015 (Singapore) where the Philippines went undefeated in all six matches.

"The SEA Games is always an event we aspire to do well in, it was our silver medal back in 2007 that launched rugby in the Philippines. Since then, our game grew dramatically thanks to the PSC. With the support of both the PSC, Globe Telecom and the rest of our loyal sponsors, we look to repay the faith come August in KL" shared Matt Cullen, Managing Director of the PRFU.

The Volcanoes are likely to form the top four and compete for medals against home nation Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. The Philippines however are forced to face tough southeast Asian competition with the unavailability of key personnel from their dominant 2015 Gold Medal team.

"Malaysia will most likely be our toughest competition, however in Rugby 7s any team on their day can win. Singapore and Thailand have also shown that in past tournaments. Its going to be a tightly contested tournament. It will be a test for the Philippines as always however the Volcanoes never back down from a challenge, we have the squad to go back-to-back Gold Medals" Cullen added.

The Volcanoes are coming off two highs, a podium finish at the SEA 7s in April and a Gold Medal finish in the Asia Trophy Series just last February.

The Globe Volcanoes will head into their official training camp on August 5 where only 12 players will be selected to travel and form Team Philippines. The Volcanoes will be lead by national coaches Frano Botica and David Johnston.

Giving female rugby players from Asia’s poorest communities a once in a lifetime opportunity

6/8/2017

BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND, 8 JUNE 2017: Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017 is set to inspire young female rugby players from disadvantaged communities in Asia, with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), World Rugby, and ChildFund Pass It Back giving them the opportunity to visit Ireland and take part in an international rugby competition.

Pass It Back is an innovative Sport for Development program led by ChildFund in partnership with World Rugby, Asia Rugby and Women Win that delivers an integrated life skills and rugby curriculum for children and young people in disadvantaged communities across Asia.

To date, more than 3,000 children and youth from Laos, the Philippines and Vietnam have benefitted from participation in the program, with girls making up over 50 per cent of the players and coaches.

Chris Mastaglio, Director of ChildFund Pass It Back, said: “Working in partnership with the IRFU and World Rugby, we decided to hold this event in the lead-up to the Women’s Rugby Cup Final to show that women and girls’ rugby is developing across the world – from international players at the event, to grassroots players from countries like Laos, Vietnam and the Philippines. In addition, ChildFund’s Pass It Back program prioritises gender equity and the inclusion of girls, so we will have lots of female players from Asia taking part who can be inspired by their peers in Belfast.”

“It’s incredibly exciting – many of our young coaches and players have not left their province before, let alone flown on a plane to a different country. This is going to be such a great opportunity for them, and we thank IRFU for helping to make this happen.”

Youths coming from Asia will play under the banner of the South-East Asian Dragons, and will compete with girls teams from across Belfast in a participation tag rugby event, the ChildFund Pass It Back Cup 2017 Belfast at Belfast Harlequins RFC on 21 August, the day before the Women’s Rugby World Cup Final.

Nora Stapleton, Women’s and Girls Development Manager of the IRFU, said: “We are delighted to include ChildFund Pass It Back in our Impact Beyond programmes for Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017, and we look forward to seeing girls from Belfast and surrounding areas welcoming girls from communities across Asia.”

ChildFund Pass It Back was established for young people who face significant poverty, and have few, if any, opportunities to get involved in organised sport. For young girls, the obstacles are even greater.

It is an absolute privilege for the IRFU to be able to support the development of new talent in these remote areas – by sharing our skills and knowledge we can get both young women and men excited about the game, and inspire a whole new generation of players in Asia.”

LAGUNA, PHILIPPINES – Under wet conditions, the undefeated Eagles RFC fell to a disciplined Manila Nomads for the first time in three years. The Manila Nomads caused the biggest upset in the 2017 SPI 15s League, running away with the Premiership 32 points to 29 at Southern Plains.

The Nomads asserted their dominance from the first whistle, capitalizing from an Eagles mistake. Nomad David Bogul plowed over early using the dominance of their forward pack. Not long after, the visitors found themselves within the attacking zone scoring another 5 points through Jason Chappell. Chappell reaped the rewards after a dominant line out making it 12 points to nothing after 5 minutes.

The Eagles saga continued, ill discipline costing the heavy favorites. A red card was awarded to flyhalf Jackson Pato who would no longer return to play for the entire game. A yellow card given to Eagles captain Timothy Bweheni. The Eagles found themselves two men down only nine minutes into the first half. After a slight delay due thunderstorms the Nomads picked up where they left off scoring down the left flank through Davoud Bastable. The Nomads set themselves a solid foundation after 15 minutes leading 17 points to nil.

Gregory Golman shed light for the Eagles breaking through in the 23rd minute scoring for the Eagles and converting his own try. It wasn’t long however for the Nomads to regain their dominance scoring in the 36th minute to make it 22 to 7 at the half.

In the second half the Eagles looked to make an early comeback with Francis Tagalia scoring early. Philippine Volcano Jake Letts brought more hope to the Eagles breaking the line however desperate defense from the Nomads kept the Eagles out. JK Talon kept the Eagles alive scoring back-to-back points for Eagles making it 25 to 17 in the 65th minute.

Nomad Mike Yu looked to put the game out of reach capitalizing off a driving maul scoring and making it 32 to 17 with 8 minutes remaining. Eagles made a valiant effort to close down the gap to three points with tries both to Letts and Tagalia scoring in the dying seconds.

“It was a very tough game in miserable conditions. Stopping halfway for the lightning storm didn’t help anyone, but great to see some attacking play from both sides and it was a close high scoring game in the end. We’ve been building all season especially since we lost our home ground last year. We’ve also been recruiting and training hard, especially on fitness and strength, so we are delighted with our performance today” shared Nomads captain, James Salter-Duke“

In the Premiership Plate final the Santos Knight Frank Mavericks comfortably beat the Alabang Ibons 23-5. The Mavericks finishing the season in third place. In the Women’s division, a development series saw NDT Green overcome the NDT Reds 30 to 24.

“It’s been a remarkable season for the SPI 15s, an upset in the final shows how hard work can pay off. Congratulations to the Nomads, they were deserved winners on the day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Seapac Philippines as the Headline Sponsor also, they have been outstanding supporters of this event" shared Jovan Masalunga, Competition and Rugby Development Manager for the SPI 15s.
