Quezon City, Philippines – September 22, 2023 – The Philippine Rugby Football Union Inc (PRFU) is proud to announce its partnership with Socks Lang, a leading local brand company known for its innovative and high-quality socks. The partnership agreement was officially signed on September 20, 2023, at Gerry's Grill Eton Centris in Quezon City, Philippines. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for both organizations and paves the way for a promising future in the world of rugby.

Present at the momentous signing ceremony were PRFU President Ada Milby and General Manager Acee San Juan, alongside Socks Lang co-founders Gelo Bato and Macabael. The event was attended by key stakeholders, media representatives, and rugby enthusiasts, all eager to witness the union of these two prominent entities.

Under this partnership, Socks Lang will serve as the official socks provider for the Philippine Volcanoes, the national rugby sevens team of the Philippines. The Philippine Volcanoes are gearing up for the highly anticipated Asia Rugby 7s Series Leg 2 scheduled to take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from October 14 to 15, 2023.

Philippine Rugby Announces PH Volcanoes National Team Selection for the 19th Asian Games Rugby 7s

Manila, Philippines — The Philippine Rugby Football Union Inc. (PRFU) is thrilled to unveil the elite squad that will proudly represent the Philippines at the 19th Asian Games Rugby 7s, scheduled to be held from September 24 to 26, 2023, in Hangzhou, China.

After rigorous evaluation and intensive training, the PRFU is proud to announce the final twelve players who will carry the Philippine flag into the prestigious tournament. These remarkable athletes were selected from a talented training camp squad of 18 players, a testament to their dedication and skills.

The selected players for the Philippine Volcanoes National Team are (jersey number indicated):

This impressive squad boasts a mix of seasoned veterans and promising new talent. Notably, the team will be co-captained by two distinguished players, Tommy Gilbert and Kai Stroem, both of whom bring a wealth of experience and leadership to the field.

The team also includes veterans, Vincent Young and Justin Coveney, who were part of the 2014 Asian Games team that achieved a commendable 5th-place finish. Additionally, seven players from the gold medal-winning team at the 2019 SEA Games are returning to bring challenge at the Asian Games.

​A noteworthy aspect of the team is its blend of experience and youth, with Raphael Barberis and Rafael Phillips being the youngest members. Their inclusion underscores the PRFU's commitment to nurturing future rugby stars.

In addition, 8 players from the 2022 Asia Rugby Sevens team which finished in 3rd place in Incheon, South Korea, will be back in action, determined to surpass their monumental feat in last year's international 7s season. 

Team Philippines is grouped in Pool A with SEA rival, Malaysia, and strong contenders, Hong Kong China. First match will be against Malaysia and will kick off at 10:00 am on 24 September 2023, followed by the match against Hong Kong China at 6:30 pm (+8 GMT). Match times on the 25 and 26 September 2023 are TBC. Match venue is at 
Hangzhou Normal University Cangqian Athletics Field. Livestream link to be confirmed.

The Ultra Philsports Complex, renowned for its world-class sporting facilities and central location, provides the perfect backdrop for this thrilling leg of the PRFU 7s Series. Rugby enthusiasts and sports fans alike can expect an action-packed weekend of intense competition, camaraderie, and the vibrant spirit of rugby.

Philippine Volcanoes Men's National 7s Team Prepares for 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China

(PRFU) is pleased to announce that the Philippine Volcanoes Men's National 7s Team is in full preparation mode for the 19th Asian Games, scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China, from September 24 to 26, 2023. The team will be competing in pool A against strong rivals Hong Kong, China, and Malaysia, and they are determined to make their mark on the international rugby scene.

The men's team has gathered at the state-of-the-art New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac, for an intensive training camp that will run from September 13 to 20, 2023. Under the guidance of Coach Darryl Suasua, the team is honing their skills, perfecting their strategies, and strengthening their bonds as they prepare for the highly anticipated tournament.

The Philippine Volcanoes Men's National 7s Team has a rich history of representing the nation with pride and determination on the rugby field. The last time the Philippines competed in the Asian Games was in Incheon, South Korea, in 2014, where they showcased their resilience and talent by finishing in 5th place. With their eyes set on the podium, they are eager to surpass their previous achievements in Hangzhou.

2023 PRFU 7s Series - Luzon Leg 3 Results: SKF Makati Mavericks Ricky and Eagles RFC Clinch CUP Champion Titles

The 2023 PRFU 7s Series - Luzon Leg 3, held on 9 September 2023, concluded in spectacular fashion, with thrilling matches and intense competition. The rugby community witnessed outstanding performances from teams in both the Men's and Women's Divisions. The event took place at the prestigious Ultra Philsports Complex in Pasig City and showcased the exceptional rugby talent present in the Luzon region.

In the Men's Division, Eagles RFC emerged as the CUP Champions of the men's division, displaying incredible skill and determination. They faced off against the formidable Clark Jets, who had secured the CUP Champions title in the 2nd Leg of the series two weeks ago. The final was an intense match, with Eagles RFC ultimately securing victory. The team from the south secured a very comfortable lead of 24 points against Clark Jets at full time. Eagles scrumhalf, Shunsuke Komura, was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the men's division. 

With Eagles RFC winning the 3rd leg, it sets up a very tight race for the overall winner of the 2023 PRFU 7s season in the men's division. Manila Nomads and Clark Jets have also won the CUP CHAMPIONS title in the first two legs.

The Women's Division witnessed an equally exciting showdown, as the SKF Makati Mavericks Ricky claimed the coveted CUP Champions title of the women's division. Eagles RFC, who had clinched the CUP Champions title in the previous leg, put up a spirited fight, with the final ending in a thrilling 14-15 score line in favor of SKF Makati Mavericks Ricky. Eagles RFC  scored the first try of the match. However, SKF Makati Mavericks capitalized on the errors of the team in white and scored 3 consecutive tries from Shiela Patino (2 tries) and Rara Sales (1). Because of her overall leadership on the field, Sales was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the women's division. 

In addition to the CUP Champions, the Plate Champions of each division were also crowned. SKF Makati Mavericks Franky emerged as the Plate Champions in the Women's Division, showcasing their resilience and skill throughout the competition. Meanwhile, in the Men's Division, SKF Makati Mavericks clinched the Plate Champions title, adding to their success in this leg.

The Bowl Champion title went to SKF Makati Mavericks Roosters, who demonstrated their prowess on the field in a hard-fought battle. SKF Mavericks Roosters secured 10 points against Global City 7's  7 points.

This exciting round 3 resulted to SKF Makati Mavericks clinching 4 titles overall in the 3rd leg of the 2023 PRFU 7s Series - Luzon. A fantastic achievement by the club! Congratulations to all the players, coaches, and management involved in this great program.
