Get Into Rugby Festival/CBRE Juniors Tournament for the Month of October

The Get Into Rugby Festival/CBRE Juniors Tournament for the month of October was held last Saturday, October 4, at Southern Plains field in Silangan, Laguna. Twenty-six juniors touch and tackle teams under the PRFU Usbong Rugby program came to the venue to compete for the top spot. Last Saturday also saw an increase in the number of participating teams in the juniors club 10s tackle games. From last month's six teams (4 teams in u16 and 2 teams in u14), we welcomed two additional teams which were British School Manila u14 and Quest SOS Children's Village u14.

The u10s touch division saw the dominance of the vastly improved Junior Eagles team under the coaching of National Development Team players brothers Jovic and Jaypee Paypon. They came away with two wins and no losses in the tournament.

It was the new team, Haven for Children boys from Alabang, who topped the u12 touch division with two wins and no losses. These boys, supported by Junior Chamber International - Alabang Chapter, just learned the sport last August, through one of the Usbong Rugby clinics organized by PRFU Development section.

The Leighton Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation regained their dominance both in the u14 and u16 touch divisions. Inspired by the recent Volcanoes Asian Games team visit to their foundation, the Tuloy boys emulated their idols and impressed the spectators with their superb skills and natural athletic ability. The boys finished the tournament with a clean slate in both divisions and produced some spectacular team tries.

Four u14 teams and four u16 teams competed in this month's club youth 10s tackle tournament. New team BSM u14 won with a single try difference over the Clark Jets of Pampanga. Final score was 17-12.  SOS boys u14 showed their speed in their backs line and ran away with 24 unanswered points (4 tries and 2 conversions) against the Mavericks u14 team. Full time score was 24-0. The last u14 match for the day was between BSM and Mavericks. BSM boys had a steady first half and scored 2 tries which were both converted. Mavericks came out strong at the start of the second half and scored a try to inch closer to the BSM boys. Time wasn't on their side to make a complete comeback as full time was called and score ended at 14-5.

The first match of the u16 teams ended with a draw (5-5) between local boys Clark Jets and SOS. The second and last u16 match of the day was between the Mavericks and the Junior Eagles. The Eagles fought bravely but the Mavericks leaned on their experience to score two tries and end the game with 10-0 lead. 

Starting next month to early February, these junior tackle teams will compete in the MANSAC school boys tournament. Some of these local club teams will also compete in the Asian Junior Rugby 10s International Tournament to be held on November 15-16 in Southern Plains field, Silangan Laguna.
