The grassroots players of the island of Cebu shined in the recent 2022 PRFU Visayas Rugby Cup held on May 28, 2022 at the Cebu City Sports Complex. A total 0f 15 age group teams competed in the first officially organized festival by the Philippine Rugby Football Union in the Visayas region since March 2020. This was also the biggest so far, with teams from north and south of Cebu competing.
In the u19 rugby 7s division, it was Team South who won the championship. John Carlo Sablano of Team South was awarded the MVP. Meanwhile, SOS North finished as the top team in the u19 touch rugby division. Gregorio Galapin of SOS North was later awarded the MVP of the division.
A series of women's rugby 5s was also played between the two girls teams of Cebu. Team 1 came out as the overall winners after the matches and youngster Kathleen Mae dela Pieza was awarded the MVP.
In an exciting u15s finals match, it was Naga City and Pasil who competed against each other. Naga City, despite being the newest team in the competition and traveling the farthest just to join, won the division championship. The match was so tight that a golden point try was needed to secure the win for the team. For his exemplary performance, Gian Carlo of Naga City was awarded the MVP of the division. The men's rugby teams from the north and south also played a couple of exhibition matches of rugby 7s matches against each other.
Overall, it was a great day of rugby in the Queen Island of the South. Kids, youth, and adults came out to play rugby in front of their families and friends. It was a great turnout for the #SaturdayIsRugbyDay in the island of Cebu. The next leg of the 2022 PRFU Visayas Rugby Cup is scheduled on June 25, 2022.
