Koronadal City - The Philippine Rugby Football Union, in partnership with the Dadiangas Generals RFC and the City of Koronadal, successfully organized the 2022 Globe 7s Series on 15 October 2022 in the island of Mindanao. This is the first inter-club domestic competition after more than 2 years since the pandemic. The culminating activity of the Grassroots to Global program was also held with a girls' touch rugby festival participated by 4 teams.
In the National Development Division, it was Dadiangas Generals B which finished on top with a 17 - 10 win against their fellow clubmates, the Dadiangas Generals A. Recently certified World Rugby level 2 for 7s Coach, Ivan Hendrix Reyes, led the team on and off the field. Ricky Unao (pictured), the scrumhalf for Generals B, was awarded the Most Valuable Player for his outstanding playmaking skills all throughout the day.
Well done to the Generals for a thrilling finale of the tournament!
The Davao Durians RFC dominated the rest of the divisions, winning the Women's, Colts Boys, and Colts Girls Divisions. These Colts teams are both coached by the youth leaders of the club, namely Attila Kythe Rivero (Colts Boys) and Novy Luna (Colts Girls). This is the testament of the focus on development and pathways of the club for their youth members.
Here are the MVPs per division:
Women's - Jessa Malate (Davao)
Colts Boys - Cassey Martin Mangao (Davao)
Colts Girls - Mari Selena Galicto (Davao)
The PRFU would like to thank Honorable Mayor Eliordo "Bebot" Ogena for the support in making this festival successful. Massive thanks as well to PRFU Development Officer, Blessie Kate Delos Santos, and Dadiangas Generals representative, Maria Gabriela Braganza, for the assistance as well.
The PRFU is looking to organize another leg of the Mindanao series before the year ends.
